Solitaire is a genre of card games that can be played by a single player, drawing its name from the Latin word "solitarius," or alone. These games, popular around the globe, are prominently known for their emphasis on strategic thinking and their adaptable difficulty levels, making them an excellent past-time activity for a wide variety of individuals.

The most well-known solitaire game is Klondike Solitaire, frequently known merely as Solitaire. This game begins with seven piles of cards laid out on a table, with the first pile containing one card, the second pile two cards, and so on, up to the seventh pile which contains seven cards. The top card of each pile is face-up, while the remaining cards are face-down. The object of the game is to move all the cards onto four foundation piles, each representing one suit, in ascending order from Ace to King.

While Klondike Solitaire is likely the most recognized variant, there is an unimaginable variety of solitaire games, each with unique rules and strategies. For instance, FreeCell Solitaire is a popular variant that, unlike Klondike, deals all cards face up at the beginning of a game, providing complete information to the player and making the game more strategy-based than luck-dependent. There is also Spider Solitaire, which uses two full decks and invites players to arrange the cards in descending sequences from King to Ace, being careful to maintain the same suit, with the aim of removing entire sequences to the foundations as they're completed. Other variants include Pyramid Solitaire, Golf Solitaire, Yukon Solitaire, and thousands more.

The appeal of solitaire games often stems from their perfect balance of chance and strategy. Many games require a blend of foresight, tactical decision-making, and a certain willingness to take calculated risks based on the state of the game. However, the influence of chance means that no amount of skill can guarantee success every time, leading to an engaging and often tense gaming experience.

Solitaire's prominence surged in the late 20th century when it was included as a standard game on Microsoft Windows. The digitalization of Solitaire not only preserved the traditional gameplay elements but also added new dynamism with scoring systems, timed games, and levels of difficulty. It turned into an easy way to take short breaks from work or alleviate stress.

While Solitaire originated as a physical card game, its transition to the digital world has increased its accessibility and versatility. With numerous variants available on various platforms, people are never more than a few clicks or taps away from a quick game of solitaire.
